Brother, follow whatever path necessary to overcome your fear of suffering, or your dread of persecution. Follow the path of Jesus, accepting His Cross. Only in this way, will God call you His son! PERFECT THROUGH SUFFERING Dr. Phil Chavez Brothers, as we withstand these trying times, St. Paul teaches that Jesus receives glory not only because of who He is, but also by what He did. Or what He suffered. That is, He surrendered to the bitter death on the Cross. Book of Hebrews gives an important lesson about this acceptance. Christ call us brothers when we accept suffering—like He did. We are sons of God. And the Divine Son makes our sonship possible through suffering. If we want the honor of being one of His brethren, like Jesus, we must walk in that same path by which He sanctifies us. The trail of the Cross. “[W]e see Jesus,… crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. For it was fitting that he,.. in bringing many sons to glory, should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through suffering. For he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified have all one origin. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brethren” (Heb 2:9-11). Jesus is not ashamed to call us brothers when we have joined Him in His suffering. Thus, we must overcome our fear of suffering in order to participate with Him in His glory. We are not here to have our needs met or simply “go to heaven”. But to glorify His great name. God receives honor not when we achieve the American dream; rather walking with Christ who was made “perfect through suffering.” Today men stand in great fear of persecution. Well, isn’t that what Our Lord promised us? Now that tyranny may be upon us, are you going to cut and run? Or will you accept the chalice handed to you? As long as you fear persecution, you will never be free. Nor can you be one of Christ’s “brethren.” Brother, follow whatever path necessary to overcome your fear of suffering, or your dread of persecution. Follow the path of Jesus, accepting His Cross. Only in this way, will God call you His son! It’s your move.
